WHAT IS YOUR T ZONE???

IT is the mucous membranes of your eyes, nose and mouth. 

    This is how the majority of disease enters OUR bodies. For Respiratory and Gastro-intestinal diseases it is 100% of the portal of entry!! This why the 4th Principle of Hand Awareness is SOOO IMPORTANT!!

     If You NEVER touch those mucous membranes with a dirty(contaminated) finger you will NOT be sick again from a respiratory or gastro-intestinal illness!! IMAGINE IT!!  If have pictures of people breaching the "T Zone" send them to us so we can share them. If we ALL practiced this 4th Principle there would NOT be a Pandemic!  Imagine that!

     Keep your eye on the adults to help re-train them. So they can teach the children the correct behavior.

Farley's Shield

Well here I am in DC at school and perhaps I should have worn the shield to prevent me from rubbing my nose and probably would not have developed pneumonia. Well, Henry maybe you have a good idea!  Oh, now I am in South Africa.

Eliza's Shield

I was not really aware how many times I touched my face until I tried  wearing this one time. Perhaps it should be a training device for students to wear on fridays! Does your school have a Henry the Hand Champion Handwasher Club?

Patient Safety Shield

I am wearing this Patient Safety Shield (PSS) in the office to demonstrate how effective it is  as a TEACHING device and SAFETY tool. I wear the PSS on rounds to the hospital to help reinforce the significance of changing human behavior to benefit patient Safety. Since MRSA is colonized in the HCWs noses, atleast 30% of the HCWs are colonized at any one time and since it is recommended to treat and remove the HCW(HealthCare Worker) from clinical care until eradicated (CDC in 1983), perhaps 6 weeks. The responsible step in the health care arena is to use the barrier method to protect the patient by reducing coloniztion, and to help change the HCWs habit. I am solo practice Family Medicine physician who teaches primary prevention techniques all day long to patients and felt it was past time to teach other HCWs the importance of Hand Awareness. Remember,
"Do not touch the T-zone (mucus membranes)!"
