Champion Handwasher Hospital Kit Instructions
Champion Hand Washer Hospital Kit Instructions
Getting Started:The Champion Hand Washer Hospital Kit is a Corrective Action Plan for much of the Hospital Acquired Infecions we are facing today. This Tool Kit contains the following materials to help your hospital successfully change the behavior of ALL of the staff members around Hand Awareness(hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette) and improve "genuine communication" across levels of authority to help move closer to a "culture of safety" to benefit patient safety and reduce nosocomial infections. This simple behavior modification program reinforces the Infection Control Principles, CDC guidelines and JCAHO goals in a visual and humorous fashion that is memorable or your staff. There should be emphasis at regular reinforcement intervals during the designated “weeks” each year of Infection Prevention Week, National Hand Washing Awareness Week, Patient Safety Awareness Week and National Clean Hands Week. This will help create a more "communicative" environment for the staff that will facilitate the goal of each Infection Control and Patient Safety department of your hospital and to improve STAFF compliance with existing hand hygiene guidelines promoted by the CDC and reviewed by JCAHO. Items in kit: Champion Hand Washer stickers, Leave the Germs Here electro-static labels, Champion Hand Washer tattoos(water soluble), Respiratory droplet spritzer, Germ Potion iquid 4 Principles of Hand Awareness poster, Germs on Your Hands poster, Handwashing evaluation sheet, Sample questions for patient survey concerning, “Did the staff/physician wash or sanitize their hands during their hospitalization?”, Handwashing poster that states “Thank you for washing/sanitizing upon entry into our hospital”, Germs On Your Hand poster. Items not in Kit but necessary or useful: Black light(Wood's Lamp) most Infection Control Dept's already have this equipment. There are not enough posters in the Kit to hang on ALL doors or entrances. You are allowed to make copies from the web site or from the posters in the Tool Kit.
Tips: The Champion HandWasher stickers should be placed on the soap/sanitizer and paper towel dispensers as a visual queue to increase compliance with hand hygiene. The germ potion and respiratory droplet demonstrations should be scheduled by Infection Control or Patient Safety to be demonstrated during each of the designated week outside the cafteria during lunch and dinner. The Germs On Your Hand poster should be displayed on the back of the door exiting each and every staff, elevators and public bathrooms. Some hospitals will choose to use the small stickers on their employee badges instead of buttons on their jackets (be sure to specify when ordering). Also, do not forget to hang the posters at every entrance to the hospital including staff entrances. As a self-evaluating handwashing measure, you may use our sample in the Kit or your own as long as it can be demonstrated to the evaluator when they request this information. The Champion Handwasher tattoos should be given to the patients pre-op to be placed around thesurgical site as a reinforcement tool and locator for the surgery site. Random Audit: The random evaluation that we are asking you to participate in is to ensure that at regular intervals, which are the designated weeks, that every institution’s Infection Control department and Facility Management department are collaborating to make certain this simple effective behavior modification program continues to improve the compliance with the JACHO's goals and CDC’s hand hygiene guidelines and to open up "genuine communication" across levels of authority to move closer to a "culture of safety" in your hospital. Outcomes of the Champion Hand Washer Hospital criteria measurement tool will be self-reported at the close of each of the designated weeks by a member of the Infection Control department/facility management department/Patient Safety department or the designated Champion Handwasher Officer. There will be a random audit of the results that are reported by either a site visit, phone call or written request of data. We would like to hae the option to publish this data in your local as well as other newspapers. You will find that your patients, their families and the local public will "thank you" for going the extra step by voluntarily participating to help reduce even further nosocomial infection incidents and to improve patient safety for ALL. Quantitative Results: 70% or greater, you are a Champion Hand Washer Hospital. Greater than 50% but less than 69% is a pass but more effort is needed for improvement. Less than 50% is not passing and it is requested that the facility have some organization or consultant “lend a hand” to help to "change the culture" to improve compliance. Our patients "Thank you" for participating in this Campaign to help benefit patient care. Sincerely, Dr. Will Also in Patient Safety... |
